The story of Peter Kay, who's seen massive success with his gentle, family-style comedy.

Peter Kay's performances appeal to all generations, there's no swearing or reference to drugs and sex, and he's always full of energy and enthusiasm.

With his northern style of humour, Peter Kay is one of the few younger comedians who carries the mantle of northern maestros from previous decades like Les Dawson and Eric Morecambe.

In this non-fiction audio book, Johnny Dee charts the comedian's rise to success from his earliest days at Bolton in Lancashire, UK, and explains the origins of his humour and the characters.

Peter Kay's story is brought to life through interviews with friends, workmates, comedians and industry insiders.

His success has been truly phenomenal. A massive 6.7 million people viewed the broadcast of his stand-up show Live at the Bolton Albert Hall in 2003.

And his music video (Is This the Way to) Amarillo? which he filmed for Comic Relief in 2005, was at the top of the charts for seven weeks and sold over a million copies. The video shows Peter Kay marching towards the camera accompanied by various famous people, or lookalikes, to the song sung by Tony Christie.

His big break came back in the Nineties when he won the North West Comedian of the Year competition in 1997. After this he went into TV comedy with “The Peter Kay thing,” the success of which enabled him to make the series “Phoenix Nights”. In this, he demonstrated his skills by portraying a couple of nightclub characters: the doorman Mr Potter and the owner, who is disabled.

Both of these series were awarded a BAFTA for best comedy. He has also scooped the prestigious Rose d`Or award at the Montreux Television festival and three awards from the Royal Television Society.

Peter Kay has appeared in TV shows like Doctor Who, where he played an evil scientist. He's also popped up in Coronation Street, Wallace and Gromit, and the TV advertising campaign for John Smiths’ bitter.
