Victoria Wood - As Seen On TV | Audio Book
A terrifically entertaining set of sketches, monologues, and musical numbers from the first series of Victoria Wood - As Seen on TV.
Victoria's gift for comic observation is superbly showcased in this two-hour comedy audio book.
She has an extraordinary talent - the ability to make everyday life brilliantly entertaining. Her enormous talent for observation and mimicry mean that speech patterns and
conversation topics are marvellously authentic and presented in amazingly funny ways.
Victoria Wood - As Seen on TV was televised on BBC 2 between 1985 and 1987. It won BAFTA Awards for all its episodes and, in 1996, it was awarded all-time Favourite Comedy
Series by the BBC itself.
In 1996, the BBC hosted an awards ceremony titled Auntie's All Time Greats. In it, As Seen On TV beat Monty Python's Flying Circus for "Favourite
Comedy Series". It beat Monty Python again when it won 'best sketch show' in the Radio Times Comedy Poll in 2001.
Victoria was supported in the series by an accomplished team of actors who complemented her perfectly: Julie Walters, Celia Imrie, Duncan Preston, Susie Blake and Patricia
Routledge.
Victoria Wood As Seen On TV really has it all:
* Great performers
* Excellent production
* Superb scripts
* Fast pace
One of the highlights of this audiobook is the show's spoof soap opera, Acorn Antiques. This was a parody, with deliberately hammy acting, predictable plot developments and daft scripts. It was so popular that it went on to become a West End musical in its own right.
Also featured on the audiobook is Victoria's theme tune, the hilarious "Let's Do It", which became her signature tune.
Victoria Wood's unique perspective on life shines through in this dazzling comedy audiobook.
In addition to writing and starring in the TV comedy, Wood used to write the entry for her show that appeared in the Radio Times TV guide.
These entries were comedy gems in themselves, and bore no relation whatsoever to what was in each episode, for example:
“Chipper Patel arrived from New Delhi in 1962 with an artificial leg and five pounds in his pocket. He now controls a multi-million-pound vinyl flooring empire. He didn’t want to
be filmed. So here's a tatty old comedy programme with some women in it.”
“The last of the series. 47: Managing Without Opera. It's the third week of the experiment. How are Hannah and Gavin coping? Why is their sitting-room pale green? Why can't
they laugh without showing their gums? What's on the other side?”
One of her self-penned synopses mentioned Mendelssohn being in the show, another said that Anita Harris would appear. None of these claims were true. It's a wonder that
Victoria wasn't sued under the Trade Descriptions Act.
