This massively successful sit-com about prison life was written by two of the greatest comedy writers of all time, Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.

Ronnie Barker plays Norman Stanley Fletcher, who's detained at her majesty's pleasure, and the additional pleasure of millions of comedy fans.

'Fletch' is an experienced jail-bird. He's doing five years in HMP Slade for breaking and entering. Each TV show begins dramatically with the condemning tones of the judge (recorded by Barker) passing sentence and the noisy slamming of heavily-reinforced prison doors.

"Norman Stanley Fletcher, you have pleaded guilty to the charges brought by this court, and it is now my duty to pass sentence. You are a habitual criminal, who accepts arrest as an occupational hazard, and presumably accepts imprisonment in the same casual manner. We therefore feel constrained to commit you to the maximum term allowed for these offences — you will go to prison for five years."

Expecting to have a cell to himself, Fletcher instead has to share with a first-time offender, the young and innocent Lennie Godber (played by Richard Beckinsale).

Reluctantly, Fletcher shows Godber how to survive in prison and becomes a father figure to the younger man.

But despite Fletch's superior life-experience, they invariably get into all kinds of trouble, either with some of the more scary inmates or the prison warders.

You get four of the very best Porridge episodes in this audio book:

Prisoner And Escort (originally broadcast in 1973)
This was the original pilot for the show, which sets the scene for the following episodes. It was broadcast more than a year before the first series. It's New Year's Eve and Fletch is about to be 'banged up' for a five-year stretch for stealing a lorry load of vodka, scotch, brandy and other alcoholic delights. He is being escorted from Brixton Prison in London to Slade Prison in the middle of Cumbria...

No Way Out (first shown on Christmas Eve 1975)
Fletch pretends to be in pain from an old knee injury to get a stay in the prison hospital over Christmas. But to get in, he'll need to get a full examination at the civilian hospital nearby...

The Desperate Hours (originally broadcast Christmas Eve 1976)
A brewing session of home-made alcohol earns Fletch and Godber an audience with the prison Governor. But they all unwittingly end up as hostages of Urwin, a would be escapee...

Pardon Me (first shown in 1977)
Released on parole, one of the inmates turns it down to campaign about not having killed his wife. Led by the irrepressible Fletch, the inmates form an appeal committee to help him...

It's hard to believe today, but when the first series has broadcast in 1974 it was met with condemnation from some of the tabloid press, shocked at the idea of a comedy show about prison life!

But very quickly any complaints were drowned out by overwhelming acclaim from the TV critics and adoration from the public for one of the greatest classic British sitcoms of all time.

Another interesting point about the show is that it has become a huge hit in prisons too, due to its authenticity.
