Set in 18th century Scotland, it includes real events from Scottish
history, such as the "Appin Murder" that took place in 1752 near
Ballachulish.
At this time Scotland was trying to become independent of
England, and a lot of the people in the story were real, such as
Alan Breck Stewart. The politics surrounding this era are revealed
sympathetically from a number of angles in the story.
The hero of the tale is David Balfour, a teenage lad. His father
dies, so he travels to see his uncle Ebenezer to claim his
inheritance.
His treacherous uncle kidnaps David so he can get hold of the
money that should be rightfully his. David manages to escape and
while travelling across the Scottish Highlands, joins a band of
Scotsmen who are fighting the English rule.
Read by James MacPherson, this one-hour audiobook brings the
characters and the Scottish landscape vividly to life.
A wonderful tale of coming of age, you can hear David grow as a
character as he transforms from a shy teenager into a confident
young man.
This audiobook is a great method of helping youngsters
experience this kind of writing, as they could otherwise be put off
by the prospect of reading Stevenson, and so miss the wonderful
storytelling and characterisation.
