A couple of apparently psychotic gunmen blast their way into a police station in Georgia, USA, killing one officer and injuring other cops.
Their hostages include the Police Chief and Sara Linton, who works in the medical profession.
Sara went there to see the chief of police Jeffrey Tolliver, who is also her ex.
But the carnage means that a relaxed conversation between these ex-lovers is not going to happen any time soon.
The tale then switches to a happier time twelve years previously when the two lovers met for the first time to provide a dual story line.
This brilliantly crafted story, the fourth in the Grant County series, jumps back and forth between the past and the present day to excellent effect.
The tension is electric and keeps you enthralled throughout. It's an excellent tale and essential listening with thrills from start to finish.
